Between Jan. 3 and Jan. 9, the Valley Regional Fire Authority responded to 339 calls for service, among them the following.

Odor investigation: 9:51 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters responding to an odor investigation in the 600 block of I Place Northeast found heavy smoke coming from the chimney of a house behind the dispatched location, and when they got into the house, they found the oil burning furnace was malfunctioning and carbon monoxide was present in the home. Firefighters then shut down the furnace, used an electric fan to ventilate the home, and completed air monitoring. Firefighters advised the resident not to use the furnace until a technician had serviced it.

Aid call: 10:30 a.m. (Auburn). Firefighters evaluated a senior citizen who had slipped and fallen on the ice, cutting her head. A fire department aid car then transported her to a local hospital.

Aid call: 5:50 p.m. (Lakeland Hills). Firefighters responding to a call from the Station 33 call box met a woman who came to the station because she hadn’t been able to get a ring off her finger for the previous two days. After unsuccessfully attempting to cut the ring with ring cutters, firefighters used ultrasound gel to slip the ring off of her finger.

Service call: 6:31 p.m. (Lakeland Hills). Firefighters responding to a report of water coming out of the ground in a backyard found several yards and one crawlspace flooded by water flowing downhill. The source of the water is under investigation.

Aid call: 12:26 p.m. (Lakeland Hills). Firefighters treated an ill infant who was suffering from a high fever. Personnel treated the patient, and a private ambulance transported him to Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Aid call: 12:46 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters evaluated a senior citizen who was complaining of a possible leg injury after a fall from standing. Suspecting a possible leg fracture, firefighters packaged the woman, and a private ambulance transported her to a hospital in Puyallup.

Car vs. pedestrian: 7:01 p.m. (Auburn). Firefighters evaluated a woman who had been struck by a pickup truck in a crosswalk near the Outlet Collection Mall, and a private ambulance transported her to MultiCare Auburn Medical Center.
